THE ART OF THE BUILD

“People shouldn’t have to settle,” says Gerald Snow of Sun Mountain Homes. “When someone decides to build the home they’ve pictured for their family, they deserve to get exactly what they’ve been thinking about.” Snow, who has been in the home building business for 25 years, creates homes that are personally customized for his clients by focusing on two methods-attentive communication and top quality building techniques.

Gerald Snow has built dozens of custom and speculation homes and developed several properties into subdivisions. Several years ago, he moved with his wife, Penni, and their two children to Sisters, drawn by the tight community, great climate and quietly beautiful natural surroundings. The Snows also saw Sisters as the perfect place to spend time together as family, both at home and outdoors. These same attributes of community lifestyle are often, Snow finds, what his clients are seeking – and what he hopes the homes that he builds can help them to find. Boasting plenty of wide-open space, views of the cascades, lots of privacy, and well-planned design, homes by Sun Mountain help those who live in them achieve the quintessential country life that Central Oregon is known for.
“We build homes for families who want a very nice home, who enjoy open surroundings, and who want room to play and ride horses,” explains Gerald. The first houses he built in Central Oregon were two 4,000-square-foot homes that sit on 7-to-10-acre parcels east of Sisters in the Desert Sands neighborhood. The area is open pastureland-private, beautiful and peaceful. “There’s a very calming feeling here,” says Snow. Recreational opportunities abound as well. Because the land parcels are near BLM land, there’s no need to get in the car first to take a hike, or to trailer the horses anywhere before saddling up.
Sun Mountain homes match the natural grandeur of these properties. Great rooms with log accents, high ceilings and rock fireplaces provide a lodge atmosphere, balanced by country touches like porcelain and granite countertops and hickory floors in spacious gourmet kitchens. “Our designs have a comfortable, warm feeling,” comments Penni. Layout is carefully planned to match lifestyle as well. A theater room, large, built-in dining nook and full baths adjacent to each upstairs bedroom make the homes appropriate for families of all stages. Outside, natural siding, more log accents, and native landscaping add to the appeal; barns and ponds are also often included in the plans for Sun Mountain properties.
Gerald’s approach to building is practiced and straightforward. Penni describes her husband as “extremely good-natured,” and Gerald draws on this natural patience, as well as his extensive knowledge and experience, to build beautiful homes for his clients. “I want to guide my clients to the home that they really want, and to do that I need to know their opinions,” he says. “My goal is that there be a steady stream of honesty and communication going both ways at all times.” The same approach directs Gerald’s relationships with his subcontractors and suppliers, where his longtime home building experience helps the process move smoothly.
Sun Mountain builds both custom and speculation homes, specializing in mini-ranch settings in the Sisters area, as well as all over Central Oregon. Sun Mountain Homes are impressive and comfortable, warm and luxurious. A home built by Sun Mountain is more than a house – its home base for the Central Oregon country lifestyle that so many people dream about.
